The Brian Betzler Memorial Award is presented in memory of Brian Betzler by his parents Helen and George Betzler, Jr., and grandfather George Betzler, Sr., to recognize full-time third- or fourth-year undergraduates in the Penn State School of Visual Arts who have exhibited exemplary artistic achievement. George Betzler, Sr. (grandfather, deceased). Francis (uncle, deceased), and Brian's aunt Barbara started the Brian Betzler Memorial Fund in 1992, the year of Brian's death. Beginning in 1992, the first golf outings were run by Francis in New Jersey. Since Francis's death in 1996, Dan Cugini, assisted by Tom McAnally, organized the annual golf outing at the Jeffersonville Golf Club in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania until 2009. Dan and Tom are two of George's best friends. The three went through school together. Full-time junior and senior students enrolled in the Pennsylvania State University School of Arts and Architecture School of Visual Arts who exhibit exemplary artistic achievement are eligible for the Brian Betzler Memorial Award each year. It is the largest award available to students studying visual arts and architecture at Penn State. Betzler Award recipients have benefited since it was established in 1996. The fund has steadily grown each year since its inception. So much so that beginning in 2001, the Pennsylvania State University School of Arts and Architecture School of Visual Arts began giving the award to two students instead of one. In 2007, the number of recipients was increased to three. Brian Betzler Memorial Scholarship Fund supports the Fight-MS Golf Outing |
